Natural plant-based ingredients have been used for centuries to dye hair. One such ingredient is indigo powder. It is all-natural and has been used for thousands of years. Devoid of any artificial chemicals, applying indigo power on hair produces good results.
Another useful all-natural ingredient is mehendi or henna powder. This is more commonly known than indigo and has also been used extensively for ages.
While both have distinctive properties and abilities to work on hair, you can surely use them together if you wish. In fact, with a bit of finesse, an indigo mehendi powder mix can produce even more remarkable results.
You will not need to use any artificial chemical products to turn your hair jet black anymore if you use this effective combination.
If you do not know how to use them properly, this is a guide that will help you out. In the end, you will find it easy to color your hair at home and get unexpected results.
All you have to do is prepare the mix of mehendi with the natural indigo powder for hair and follow the proper steps to get long-lasting color.
Remember, you can apply mehendi and indigo powder separately on your hair or together on your hair.
Let’s start by applying them separately on your hair.
Create the Foundation to Apply Indigo Powder on
At first, you will need to create a proper foundation to apply indigo to it. For this foundation, you will need to use mehendi power, and then, to get all the benefits of indigo powder on hair, apply the mix to it.
Ideally, when you apply indigo after putting a layer of henna on your hair, it will give a more natural black look to your hair. If you use only indigo and no henna, your hair will have a greenish-blue color, making it look pretty odd.
Therefore, it is always recommended that you apply henna or mehendi on your hair first and then use indigo because that will enable you to maximize the indigo powder benefits for hair.
Amount of Powder Required
If your hair is longer, you will need more powder. Here is a standard chart for the amount of henna powder needed for different lengths of hair:
- For short hair – 100 grams or 3.5oz
- For collar-length hair – 200 grams or 7oz
- For longer hair – 11oz or 300 grams
- For waist length hair – 500 grams or 18oz
Preparation
Assuming that your hair is clean and dry, you should now prepare to create the foundation to apply indigo powder on it later.
- Take a small bowl.
- Pour the henna powder.
- Put about one squirt of lemon juice.
- Stir it well with a spoon or your dyeing brush to mix it.
- Then keep on adding additional squirts of lemon juice.
- Stir it continuously to create a thick, sticky, and consistent mixture.
When done, use plastic for wrapping the bowl. Set it aside for a day at room temperature, not more than 70°F or 22°C.
How to Apply
Before you apply henna on your hair, rub Vaseline or other similar creams on your forehead, neck, and ears to prevent them from getting stained. Use a good pair of latex gloves and wear something old or cover your clothes properly to avoid staining.
Apply the paste all over your hair, starting from the back and gently working to the front. When coated completely with the paste, cover your head with plastic for about 2 to 4 hours so that it does not dry out and your hair absorbs the dye slowly.
Want to cover grey hair, leave it overnight.
Add a Layer of Indigo to the Hair
To make the mixture of indigo, get 100 grams of powder for 6-inch hair, and calculate accordingly for longer hair.
- Take another small bowl.
- Add 5ml or one tablespoon of water.
- Mix it thoroughly.
Follow the same process to apply it on your hair as you did for applying henna, starting from the roots to the tip. Keep your hair covered with a plastic food wrap or shower cap for two hours.
Wash it with cold water, and pat dry to remove excess water and let the air do the rest.
It will take a couple of days to take effect, after which you can use shampoo on your hair.
